Seat cushions for Swallow Bayraider
« on: 03 May 2018, 08:32 »
Has anyone found a good source for cockpit cushions that can also be moved to the rowing position?

Preferably available at short notice as we need them in 10 days for a trip to the Lake District, and then for the Caledonia Raid.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

Have a look at Force4 Flat Fenders. 41x21x5 cm. Good padding for bottoms, backs and boats.
They are lightweight waterproof and float. Really useful.

Andrew, Nothing personal but you must have a bit more rear end padding than me!  I ordered those useful looking fenders and they were as hard as the deck so I returned them. Perhaps they soften up with age?

I’m with Ged on choice of bum protection.  The extra seating height gives a better angle of attack on the forward oars too.

I bought a sheet of inch thick closed cell foam from ebay, used the carving knife to cut it into rectangles about 12 x 18 (inches) and then glued those together in blocks of 4. They are certainly softer than the cockpit lockers and give you that extra height. With a small hole at one end and a piece of suitable string, they make a useful fender too!

I have one of the Force 4 ones recommended by Andrew and agree with others that they are almost as hard as the deck! The link you provided Ged now goes to a page that says these items are no longer available.

That's the one.
I've got two single Plastimo ones and a double one that I bought from a chandlers in Falmouth, it's their own brand, much cheaper than the plastimo and seems just as good.

I've seen own brand ones in a few different places.
