Rudder Rope Replacement

  1. I replaced my rudder control lines like this year ago and it was quite straightforward. Points I would add:
-use 10min Araldite so that you are not waiting around too long, but if it is hot, don’t waste time, it sets quickly.
-use a thinner line with a dyneema core. I found the standard 6mm lines on my BC20 could barely fit around and through the spaces it had to go through to come up under the tiller. 4mm dyneema fitted easily and the rudder was much easier to raise.
-I tried using a 20mm spade drill bit, but found it was actually easier to use a smaller bit and drill out the knot in pieces. Trying to do it all at once lead to the drill bit being knocked around by the knot. If you are using a drill press (I was kneeling on the ground on a slipway) it might be different.
