I had seen such postings but I believe the 290Nm torque is for heavier duty caravan bearings which are sealed and non-tapered. I have asked Mersea trailers for advice, will post back if I hear.
In the meantime I've dismantled the hubs, and the old "one-shot" nuts that came off had been crimped onto a slot at the end of the axle. It also didn't feel like 290Nm of torque to get it off, in fact it was probably less than a normal wheel nut. I found another source which said to torque to 50Nm and then back off 30degrees and lock with a "special tool" but no reference to what that might be. It may end up being a nail punch and hammer...
