Another suggestion for battery operated lights are these from Norway. Should have a distributor in the U.K.  We are seeing them at many chandlers here in Canada.

I like the idea of attaching them to the top of your head using magnets, although presumably you need to look straight ahead to avoid confusing other boats and the apparatus is not recommended near a compass....

This Summer I noticed three or four cruisers (30/40 foot jobs) using a flashing white light strobe light at the mast head or on the back stay, apparently as an anchor light. There were over 25 other boats moored in Lakka harbour that night so perhaps it helps the crews find their way back from the Tavernas?
