Shroud tension
« on: 21 Jul 2012, 10:37 »
I think I remember seeing this come up in another discussion, but can I ask people's views on shroud tension. Mine (BRE) seem a little loose so I've retied them. However, on coming back after a sail, I found they seem to quite slack again... I'm now checking out better knots, but not sure whether to worry too much. As someone pointed out, in the photo of the BRE on the website, the lee shroud is billowing out quite a bit.

By the way, that's me at the helm, on my test sail last October. Alice Driscoll of Watercraft magazine was there to review the Baycruiser 23 and came out in the Expedition too, so that photo is one her colleague Peter Chesney took from the shore, as we tacked up and down battling the fierce Cardigan Bay tide.

Rob,

The discussion was towards the end of this thread http://www.swallowyachtsassociation.org/smf/index.php/topic,488.0.html

Because tension in the shrouds is maintained by the self-tacking jib when this is unfurled, there is some loss of tension when the jib is furled back up again.  The shrouds shouldn't be flapping around but if it worries you when furled, you can slip a loop attached to the front of the mast under the aft end of the jib boom to cradle it and maintain tension.  The same piece of string can convert your jib boom into a bowsprit should you want to fly your jib in non self-tacking mode.

Hi,
What knot do you tie in the strop? I see the way it is done in the owners guide. But it is not apparent to me what the knot used is. Seems like knot slippage is a common question on this. Any clarification on that please?

Regards,

David.

I found this link for a convincing knot: http://www.colligomarine.com/docs/misc/lashing_line_tie_ver_1_1.pdf

There's an owner's guide?
