Title: Lake District Meeting 2018
Post by: Matthew P on 20 Dec 2017, 22:41
Ideas please:

Where -  Ullswatter/Conniston/Windermere/other?  Possibly even Milford Haven too?

When - any particular weekend favoured or to be avoided after 22nd July?

Who - Let me know if you are interested, no commitment required.

What - Informal meeting, sail in company, mix and match crews, do as you please,  maybe share a meal out on Saturday evening

How - If I have a rough idea of numbers, where and when I''ll investigate somewhere to meet and sail from.

Merry Christmas

Matthew

We could be up for a Lake District trip with camping, late summer. My wife and I, our Bre, tent on a decent campsite, any days any format.

Hi Matthew,

Bob, Kim and Escape are interested.

Suggest not Coniston as we did it last year. Not sure about Windermere as generally busy. Really enjoyed Ullswater year before last and we never made it all the way to the top? Bottom line don't mind.
End Jul and Aug looks clear but .....!

All the best,
Bob

Hi Matthew,
Would love to sail Ullswater, but happy with either of the other lakes.
Milford Haven is very much a yes.
As for dates I've booked for the Mylor raid so any other time is good for me.
Next year is a year for sailing, done the building bit, done the boat modification bit, time to go afloat!
Thank you for starting this, happy Christmas, Tim (Papagena BRe064)

Matthew,

I'm with Bob - Ullswater and late July/August.  I like the idea of Milford Haven too.  Thank you for taking on the non-organisation of this.

If you are talking of Milford Haven how about Seafair Haven 23-30 June?

If you are talking of Milford Haven how about Seafair Haven 23-30 June?

One reason I suggest late summer for the lake District is to avoid clashing with Sea Haven which from Tim's, Tony's and others' accounts is an event worth attending, even though you may encounter a pirate choir and the BBC.

In addition to Sea Haven (and the Lakes) a Swallow Yacht meeting at Milford haven is a great idea.  Scenery ranges from a massive oil tanker port to tranquil wooded rivers with castles.  Big tides with strong currents and the risk of being stuck on mud banks adds spice to the area.  Would anyone like to start a separate thread and "not organise" a Milford Haven meeting?

Meanwhile, any more takers for a Lake District meeting in late July/August/Sept?

Would also be up for tagging along, other summer logistics permitting, camping with my wife and 8yr old. Late July or late August onward should work. Any location, the quality of the campsite is probably a bigger factor in the sell!

Helen and I could be intereted in a W/E date in the Lakes late August. It is the Cardigan River and Food Festival on the 18th August - which we are heavily involved with. So after that.  Sept. even? We are attending Seafair Haven - a really good location for sailng but difficult to organise an event due to lack of waterside campsite.

Hi Matthew and friends. Definitely interested and hoping to join-in. Currently, enjoying a beer in Florence and realising I have been behind the curve in this thread. Will discuss with my better half and try and fold Ullswater, 11th & 12th into the SMP (Summer Master Plan). Will follow-up soon

Hi John, We're very pleased you will be joining us again at Ullswater on 10th-12th August.

For everyone's information I am attempting to create an event but so far my Wordpress skills have not been up to the task  :-\, I'll keep trying.

Definitely firming-up on this. Adele and I are thinking of making it a week, couple of days before and a couple after. Will probably book accommodation soon in the hope of getting some! I plan on talking to GSC to confirm its OK for the boat to be there for the week.

Cheers for now,
John

Hi Matthew

Thanks for organising this Ullswater meet.  I'd like to bring Ella.  Any recommendations for a campsite which accepts campervans?

Thanks

With Emily and Ella joining us we now have 8 prospective boats at Ullswater 10th-12th August and room for plenty more.

Glenridding Sailing Centre has come out of hibernation and will accept bookings by phone or email for launch/recovery and parking.

I shall probably camp at:

Gillside Farm, Glenridding, Penrith CA11 0QQ
www.gillsidecaravanandcamping site.co.uk
017684 82346

Gillside Farm has pitches for tents and motor homes, is a short stumble from the Travellers Rest and and a slightly longer stumble down to Glenridding.

Sorry we will not be able to join you this year in Pippin, Bayraider 20 epoxy ply, newly refurbished by Matt and his team.  We have family coming from California to our house in Devon that weekend, but hope to see some of you in Mylor.

We are actually on our way up to Ullswater on Tuesday.  We are using it as a break on the drive up to Fort William for the Sail Caledonia Raid.  We are staying for a couple of nights at what looks to be a charming old hotel, the Howtown, recommended by the commodore of the Ullswater YC who has invited us to use their facilities nearby.  Hoping for some decent weather to take Pippin out on the lake.....

Any tips on the pleasures of Ullswater will be greatly appreciated.  Haven't been there since about 1975!

Hi MarkD, Some of us may arrive at Ullswater before Thursday 9th, so could overlap with your visit. Ullswater has many pleasures, and few things to worry about.  Not much has changed since the 1970's except a few more NT restrictions on where you can land.  Details, with map, can be seen on the  Ullswater blog on this website.

Hi Matthew

Just confirming we'll be at Ullswater. We'll stay at Gillside caravan and camping site.

Can you remind me whether the use of outboard motors is permitted on the lake?

Thanks

John

Hi John

It'll be good to see you at Ullswater.  I am planning to travel up on Wednesday evening.

I understand that motors are permitted on Ullswater but with a 10mph speed limit - so no speed advantage under engine for a SY Coast 250.  I shall be relying on wind and oars.

Here is a handy Ullswater map and guide:

The weather forecast for that weekend doesn't look bad. We've booked in an extra night - Thursday night - at Gillside.

Looking forward to it and to seeing everybody.

Matthew and all those who are going to Ullswater,

Sincere apologies, we've finally bought a house, but having just moved in there's a lot more to do than we thought. We won't be able to make it to Ullswater. We hope you all have a great time.

I've booked a table for supper at the Travellers Rest 7pm Saturday 12th Aug, on spec, for 14 people.

Please email me at mpeacock@activeppp.com if you and your party want to join me and Liz for the meal.

Apart from that, I'm launching Gladys at 10am Thursday morning at GSC and will be camping on board until Sunday

We will be gracing yourselves with our presence once more, BUT unfortunately without our boat!
We can act as your support group instead.
I booked up some time ago BUT have had problems with getting our Campervan and Boat back from repairers, so time and other stuff is against us.
Anyway we are looking forwards to a nice relaxing time there, before we head up to the farthest north of Scotland for a trip that has been on my bucket list for some time now.

We will be arriving Wed or Thurs at Gillside Camping Site and will be taking the very pleasant walk up to the 'Travelers Rest' as soon as we are sorted.

Hoping to arrive in time to join in with the sailing that day. Will also be there Monday and Tuesday, hoping to have some company though not sure if anyone else will be there still.

Rod - thanks. I was interested as I used to sail my BR20 from Glenridding when on walking/sailing holidays - but, erroneously it seems, I thought my BC23 was too big to launch there, and I thought perhaps you had used a slip somewhere.
I seem to recall they used a tractor to push me out quite some way over a stony bottom?

Yes, I'm at Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club (gcyc.co.uk) - I moved in there from the Humber Cruising Association in April.
Proving to be a really great place to sail with the only 24/7 tidal access (I believe) on the east coast between Gt Yarmouth and Whitby. Loads of interesting places to sail to, especially with our lifting keels! (See attached tracks).
You'd be very welcome to have a sail with me.

Regards
