Title: Rutland Water 2014
Post by: Peter Cockerton on 28 Sep 2013, 20:07
Prompted by some members that attended the event last year and Julian’s latest entry on "End of Season" I thought I would suggest that we get together again for probably the first of the Swallow Boat gatherings for 2014 at Rutland Water.

Myself and Andy D will organise permission to hold the event at Whitwell, car and trailer parking, access to toilets and showers etc. As per last year overnight stops on your boats will not be a problem, I will arrange rooms at a local pub for those requesting accommodation and I’m sure we can get together in the evening for a "few scoops" as my youngest lad tells me is the current term and a probably most welcome meal.

As far as dates in April are concerned any of the weekends are possible, probably best to leave a couple of weeks between this one and the Ullswater gathering so shall we plump for the 19/20th as a starter.

Please post your interest on the forum and advise me if you would like a room and meal booking. I will of course find out the cost's before making any bookings and confirm with you first.

Members comments from last year :

Great to meet so many nice people at Rutland and it was good to see all those Swallow Boats craft on the water. We'll have to do it again sometime! Thank you to Peter for organising this and getting us all on the water while keeping it friendly and informal. Somehow you even managed to fix the weather too!

Peter,
Thanks for organising a great weekend afloat. Even the weather was kind, despite the odd bit of snow lying around.  Great to meet so many Swallow owners and their boats.

To add my thanks to Peter for organising and everyone for making it such an enjoyable weekend.
It was great to meet you all.

Peter,

The problem with that weekend is that it is Easter, which probably means children coming home from the Big Smoke to eat a few proper meals, ask for money, get their laundry done, etc etc.

Graham

Do you have dates which would suit you better.

Take your point on Easter break family type issues, i floated those dates to get feedback, changing dates not a problem, lets see what the other members come back with and hopefully get dates which suit the majority.

Ullswater weekend is in the diary for May 10/11th May the weekend after your proposed dates for Rutland.

Peter, Graham,
Have not been watching posts recently due to too many nice weekends. Had a great day's sail at Rutland last Sunday in sunshine and medium strength winds. New 3-day old Bayraider there with family trailered in for the day. Had a chat but didn't manage to exchange names.
Now the weather has really turned thoughts turn to planning for 2014.
26/27th April suits me for the Rutland Rally. There is still the bank holiday weekend 3/4th May in between this one and Ullswater.

I have asked Jonathon to put the event on the forum diary for the 26/27 of April, the dates meet approval of all that have reponded to date. The Saturday evening get together was very popular last year (pub meal and a few beers) so i for one and Andy D for another would be very keen to see as many of you again next year.

So far we have :

Bayraider  20 GRP Joybells
Bayraider  20 WE Psalter
Bayraider  20 GRP Turaco 111
Baycruiser 23 GRP Anam Cara
Bayraider  17 WE.  Emily (still in build)
Bayraider  17 WE   Nona Me
Bayraider.  20 WE.  Llafurio

Hi Peter,
Great to see you're organising this event again. I'm sorry  that Vagabond won't be there in 2014. It's not that we didn't enjoy the inaugural event but because she's currently ashore (deliberately) at Balvicar, near Oban and it's a long way to trailer down to Rutland and then back for the Sail Caledonia event at the end of May.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for the weather for you.....

Many thanks for letting me know, you will be missed, especially around the meal tables with your "Salty tales". Open invitation aboard my boat should you fancy coming over.

Enjoyed reading your entry in the "messing about in boats" post, I to have on many occasions wondered why she won't respond to the helm or on one occasion "tack", all down to me forgetting I lifted the centreboard in shallow water or it has lifted off its own accord and I hadn't noticed. Come to think about it the rudder has caught me out before now as well, although it's surprising how much control you still have with the rudder blade horizontal in the water.

I hope to be there with Emily, BR17 kit number 2 Currently she needs a top coat of paint, mast & rudder making, and fitting out. Put me down as tentative.

Anthony

Look forward to seeing you there if you can get her finished, if not we could always find a crew space for you.

All

Will need to start firming things up in the new year so please let me know if you are considering attending. Interest in evening meal and overnight rooms so we can find a venue.

Several SB owners have now confirmed or registered an interest in attending our get together at Rutland this year, the list of boats is as follows :-

Bayraider  20           GRP Joybells
Bayraider  20           WE Psalter
Bayraider  20           GRP Turaco 111
Baycruiser 23          GRP Anam Cara
Bayraider  17           WE.  Emily (still in build) (TBC)
Bayraider  17           WE   Nona Me
Bayraider. 20           WE.  Llafurio (TBC)
Cardigan Bay Lugger WE  Four Sisters

If you are thinking of coming please let me know so I can give the water sports centre  prior warning, they may need to arrange for additional safety crews.

More than likely we will use the White Horse again at Empingham so I have asked them to provide the group booking rates for rooms and meals, to take advantage of the lower prices i will need you to express your interest ASAP.

Thanks

Peter Cockerton

Following a conversation with the water sports centre today they have offered a 25% discount for us on bookings of a minimum of 6 boats. The normal fee is £16.00 per day to launch your boat. A new pontoon (2013) has been installed which makes the launch very civilised and easy with built in fenders to protect you gelcoat. They have confirmed they will leave the toilet block open for the weekend and access through the new security gates so you can go out for your evening meal should you be sleeping on board.

To secure the discount on the launch i will need to prepay the fees sometime in March so once again i need to start firming things up.

The White Horse at Empingham have also come back to me, they normally charge £84.00 for a double room, this includes a cooked breakfast, if i let them know how many rooms we need they will offer a discount, so again let me know ASAP.

The boat needs work and so does the owner (festooned with NHS hardware at present.) Both should be back to normal by April.
Any room for "Four Sisters" and I?

You and 'Four Sisters' will be very welcome Tony. Looking forward to seeing you again.

NHS hardware?  Bedpans? .. Have you been fitting her out with 'enclosed heads'!

Word was out that you had been beating against a foul tide for a while...? Hope you are feeling a lot better now...

Andy:
I read the words "foul tide" with a shudder! I wont go into details but I will be walking like a duck for the foreseeable future.
The technical term for what ails me is "Oh-Gawd-not-you-again". At least, that's what the consultant said last time he did the ward rounds. (BTW never get admitted to Hospital on a Friday. Consultants dont do weekends round here! The guy turned up at 10am on Monday with the words "How are we today?"
WE?!
My reply intimated that although I couldn't speak for HIM, I was probably better than his golf handicap, which widened the eyes of his attendant staff (..they hunt the Wards in packs, y'know..) and didn't make me very popular with His Nibs. (..but you don't give a damn when you're on Morphine. I recommend it heartily!)

Michael;
You've never even MET my Granma!

Foul Tide...?  Hummm. Yes..  conjures up images of sailing passed the Anglian Water raw sewage overflow outfall during an August Bank Holiday Monday off Ingoldmells (53.11.6N 0.23.6E)... You'll need more than a couple of coats of Matts Oh-so-expensive coppercoat to protect your pristine bottom there.

Worryingingly though, I know a chap who makes a good living fishing crab right at that point .. Still at least he is selling it back to the same ones who put it there in the first place ... Good for him!

(PLEASE don't tell anyone in the medical profession about Copper coat. I've got enough problems!)

Quick question. Are showers available at the sailing club?
(A Spartan/public school -type morning swim might infringe water quality standards ..... And we wouldn't want to frighten the ducks.

Will sort out room today, can you let me know your surname please for the booking, also i must apologise for poor memory but i can't remember which boat (and name) you sail and looked on the boat registry and had no luck there either.

I have permission now for all the boats to "beach up" in front of the main cafe for an afternoon beverage so we can look over each others boats and get to know each other.

Peter,
  Bit of a blow, but...
I'm afraid I can't attend the Rutland Rally at that particular weekend. I would like to visit Rutland water at a later date, are the same sort of arrangements in place (sleeping on boat , use of showers etc.) or they for organised events only?
If so , is there a minimum number that would be required? or temporary membership of Sailing club for instance.

If there are spare places at the evening meal for myself and Liz (wife) on Saturday I would be grateful.

That's unfortunate it promises to be a good turnout, maybe next year. I can't answer your questions i'm afraid as i don't know without speaking to the watersports centre at Whitwell, best give them a call and explain yourself if that's ok with you.

“Fair Cop” guv, can I plead extenuating circumstances though, we had been out on the water in glorious sunshine at Rutland for 4 hours enjoying a sedate afternoon and as I told you the medication I was on specifically lists to keep out of bright sunlight.

PS
What goes down on tour “Stays on Tour”
What’s said on the boat “Stays on the Boat”
Despite my medication I can still recall the odd snippet myself to put a “book down my trousers” as to speak.

Dear Peter

with many apologies for late decision making, would it be possible to squeeze one more BR20 into proceedings? I would plan to arrive Sat am, and stay overnight on board. Happy to add one more to dinner if that is possible at this stage.

If the answer is no to either quite understand, equally that discounts no longer apply.

Best wishes

Bill Rollo

Bill

You will be most welcome, will reserve another place for you at the dinner.
Please call the watersports centre number on 01780 460154 and tell them you would like to pre-register for the Swallow Boats gathering and they will hopefully charge you the reduced rate.

If you could let me know your meal choices from the menus i have posted that would be good.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Probably best to assume I'm not going to make it to this one, Peter.
Have to do some work on the boat before I can go on any jaunts.

Hi Peter,

I'll be at Rutland on Saturday, sadly without Vagabond but with the Owners Agent.

I know it's a bit late but is there any chance of us being squeezed in to the bash in the evening?

Regards

Sadly my plans to finish Emily were derailed by a redundancy, new job and house move.

We won't by joining you this weekend, but I hope to be on the water later this year.

Have a great weekend.

All

Weather forecasts from the met office for Oakham

Saturday, winds s/e 13 mph gusts 23 mph mainly dry.
Sunday,  winds s/w 12 mph gusts 24 mph mainly dry

Both days a balmy 14 degrees, so a little different from last year when we still had snow on the ground.

Ideas received we can incorporate into the weekend.

Beach the boats for lunch in front of the main cafe (get together and chew over our boats)
Have our own boat jumble whilst we are having lunch, so bring with you any kit you may want to sell.
Fun race around the water towers and first back to the beach for lunch (can someone bring an air horn).

When you arrive, ask at the water sports centre where they would like us to park and rig (i have asked before but they want to decide on the day) if you are there before me ( i hope to arrive around 10:30).

If you need to get hold of me for any reason my mobile is 07774 111112

I well remember last year's weather because I slept on my boat and woke up to ice in the BRe's cabin!

When packing yesterday I included my air horn for no apparent reason but it sounds like it might be useful. You can use mine for the racing if you want.

BTW, to everyone, I'm coming boat-less this year because I'm sailing with Andy Dingle to prep for Sail Caledonia. But I am bringing my family (who are competent crew) so if anyone can give them a sail then that would be most appreciated.

See you all tomorrow.

Hi All,
Yes, I remember the ice, too. I'm also coming "boat-less" and "doing" Sail Caledonia so will be watching Andy and Jonathans preparations with interest!

I'll also bring an air horn but will only be around on Saturday.

Looking forward to it!

Jonathon and Rob

Well I’m "Billy no Mates" this year, so plenty of space on Joybells, so your offer of competent crew Jonathon is welcome. Rob, no problem if you want to join me as well (That’s competent skipper sorted).

I also have spare places on Anam Cara, especially for those proficient at loading unloading trailers!
Latest forecast looking wet first thing but brightening up late morning for a blustery afternoon.
looking forward to it.

That was a fantastic weekend at Rutland so thank you to Peter for doing such a good job of organizing everything. Thank you too to Bill, Peter and Andy for taking me and my family out on your boats.

I have created an album on the web site for this event and have uploaded my photos. If anyone else has any photos can you upload them too? Here's the link to the album:

Well done Peter, a great event.  We seemed to dodge the heavy rain that fell in other places in the UK.

I have uploaded some pictures and three GPS tracks to the gallery, including one of the Sunday race (also attached below).  Congratulations to Matthew and 'Gladys' for winning that one by a very comfortable margin (which is why you won't see him in any of my time lapse photos!).

Thanks Peter, you set a very high standard at Rutland for the Ullswater and Bala meetings.

It was fun. As usual Gladys gave pain and pleasure by suddenly disrobing in the middle of the lake on Saturday and slightly redeeming herself on Sunday but only because of a hardware and software upgrade to the nut on the helm  (Andrew Peers) and the advantage of 100 Kgs of mobile  (but not agile) ballast.  Graham and Bill did not have mobile ballast this time, so the true test will be SailCaledonia.  Bill’s new bespoke oars will probably give him the edge overall.

I’ll post some photos and maybe some disturbingly shaky video in the next few days. The company, dinner and sailing at Rutland were great, so I look forward to Ullswater in 2 weeks time and Bala in June.

Peter,

I'll add my thanks too for a great weekend - I've enjoyed my first outing with other Bayraiders, so I look forward to next time when I hope not to be last onto and off the water as I was this time! :-)
Sadly I can't make Ullswater or Bala though.

All the best

Thank you Peter,
We really enjoyed sailing at Rutland, and the meal Saturday night was excellent.
Driving to Rutland was very straight forward from Hereford as it was mainly motorway and dual carriageway. It was nice to meet up with a lot of new faces. Hope to see everybody in the future at various other events.

The weekend was a great success, many thanks to all that attended and the kind reviews. We had the wind, no rain and some sun, what more could you ask for.
I always take great pleasure in the sight of a fleet of swallow Boats on the water. and also when all beached in a line showing off there traditional looking hulls and rigging, strange how we had all the green hulls at one end of the beach and all the blues at the other, this without any plan at all; the grey hull of llafurio provided the start marker.
The Saturday morning pre sailing stroll along the jetty provided some room for thought as strong winds funnelling down the creek and the accompanying waves which make the getting of the jetty interesting. “Full tanks” “one reef, perhaps two” many muttered, “if we get her to the hammer head push the bow out we might just get a quick tack in before we get to the other side of the creek. Other clever clogs found they could launch off  the leeward side of the jetty and make things easy for themselves.  I noticed two swallow boats getting a little intimate with each other and embracing parts of their rigging on the hammer head of the jetty, that’s a little too friendly I think.
Free sailing on the Saturday morning to accommodate everyone getting their  boats ready, one casualty with Gladys losing a cotter pin on the jib halyard block at the top of the mast (beware the split ring bogey). Gladys recovered and even with her main sail cringle ripped out at the foot of the sail and “jury rigged” on the Sunday race she still stormed home ahead of my boat “Joybells” 2nd and Psalter 3rd well done Mathew.
A number of individual “duels” I think took place on Saturday afternoon, Jonathon, Andy and Olly aboard Psalter for one tried to chase me down , some excellent pictures posted in the Gallery on the forum and a couple of videos are either posted now or will be soon on YouTube. The lunch break with the boats beached in front of the main café provided a chance to look over the boats and discuss the merits of personal modifications to the boats and various bits of kit which had been installed. The Sunday exit from the beach (lee shore) provided some good examples of boat handling, we had traditional backward rowing, front facing rowing, shove off and the roar of the torqeedo, and my more sedate shove off and Minn Kota (I thought I had forgot to put one of the rowlocks on board otherwise I would have rowed (honestly). At this point I would like to say that my excellent crew Jonathon’s better half Nicki and young daughter Poppy managed the centreboard and rudder perfectly and were both instrumental in my racing position of 2nd with no whinges when I pushed her hard and occasionally “dipped the gunnels”.
With 23 sat around one long table for the evening meal, all I think a little “oiled” with pre- dinner drinks the chatter and banter was quite evident from the other side of the restaurant, only the arrival of the starters took the level down a few dB’s. It was really good to see so many people with the common interest of sailing enjoying themselves so much. I was a little worried that the menu was a little “fancy” and may not quench the hunger of people that had been out on the water all day but all the comments were positive and I for one was struggling with the last few mouthfuls of the “sticky toffee pudding”. As usual we had the “tail end Charlie’s” at the bar until they closed it (me for one) Andy took his jumper off over his head and his shirt went up with it, someone shouted “there she blows, harpoon him Ned” Andy didn’t look pleased but it raised a few titters.
So one again, many thanks for coming along and making the get together so enjoyable, I will try and get to some other rallies this year to meet some of you again.
