Title: Ullswater 2015
Post by: Matthew P on 16 Jun 2014, 17:53
Graham suggested 13-14 June for an Ullswater Rally for 2015 because next year Gulf de Morbihan is 11-17 May and SailCaledonia is 23-30 May and postponing a Bala rally to later in the Summer.

Following Rory’s suggestion I asked Ullswater Sailing Club and they can host the SB rally on 13-14 June if we sign-up for it soon. Ullswater SC offered a 20% discount if more than 10 boats attend, so visitor fees will be:

Visitor Fees- Temporary Membership

Daily £12.80 (per family/couple), £8.80 (individual)
Monday-Friday or Friday to Monday £32 (per family/couple), £20.80 (individual)
Weekly (7 days) £56 (per family/couple), £40 (individual)

Camping fees per night

1. Small tent that you cannot stand up in £8
2. Medium Tent no more then four people £12
3. Large Tent/trailer tent 5+ persons £16
4. Motor home/camper van 2 axle £16
5. Large motor home 3 axle £20

As a group  we would receive free  parking for boats and trailers and use of the slipways and jetty's. Access to the clubhouse at all times for showers, members kitchen and socialising. Kitchen/bar is open for meals Friday nights, all day Saturday (from 8 30 am) including an evening meal and Sunday until 6 pm.

On the Saturday they can either provide a meal of our choice and our own room that can seat 30 people or tag onto the social programme in the main Clubhouse.

Looks a good deal! Is anyone provisionally interested? – no commitment just an intention.

:( Unfortunately I'm probably committed for the Friday and Saturday but it's quite likely that Gobhlan-G will be there as I will encourage my crew (who mostly sailed the boat on the Saturday this year) to join in and if so I will probably take a week's temp membership and sail on the Sunday and some of the following week.

Possibly Matthew - depends on when the Teif Rally falls (if there is any deamnd for it). June is the month I aim for if there is a good tide in the month.

Quite a flurry of interest - 7 brave boats for next year already; thank you.

Hopefully many of us will meet at the Teifi Rally this 12-14 Sept, as well.

I've asked Ullswater SC about sleeping aboard Andy, I'll post the response as soon as I get one.

I'm at Rutland today and Monday, ballasted and well reefed probably.

If you are looking for a good b&b near the yacht club, you won't find better than the Sun Inn in Pooley Bridge.

The owners are hands on and the staff very friendly. All bedrooms have been refurbished and the breakfast is fantastic.

Nic and I stay whenever we are over on Ullswater.

Me too! (Assuming no other commitments rear their ugly heads.)
Prefer to sleep aboard - if a showerblock is available - either on the pontoon (for choice) or on a level bit of the dinghy park. Otherwise camping.

Ullswater Sailing Club confirmed today that potty trained crew may sleep aboard.  I would be surprised if showers are not available in the clubhouse, otherwise it may be an occaision for an Ice Bucket Challenge.

Great to have you along Tony!

Good news Matthew.. put me down for a berth on the pontoon (though I don't mind anchoring and using the dinghy if required). But sharing a pontoon with 'Four Sister's may have some obscure attraction... will hopefully be bringing some Breton Cidre back from Morbihan too that will be nicely chilled in the water ballast tanks,,

Andy - and BC23 'Equinox'

Hi, Andy.

Quote:-
“...But sharing a pontoon with 'Four Sister's may have some obscure attraction... “

You have no idea how concerning I find that statement!  Not at all ameliorated by the thought of possibly blagging some French cider off you.  (I usually bring a boat full of cheese back from the Morbihan er...which might explain why I am not used to company on the pontoon.)

Good to hear that “Equinox”  (What happened to “Druid”....or was that someone else?) will be taking pride of place on the Swallow Boats stand at Southampton.
Some of the sticky finger marks you will find all over her after the show will be mine! Heh Heh!
Title: Re: Ullswater 2015
Post by: Andy Dingle on 09 Sep 2014, 14:14
It will no doubt be a memorable experience Tony.. Breton Cidre and cheese? Perhaps we should anchor some way off after all. Outrageous french accents, berets?  No..  of course not..

You are correct - 'Druid' was an early choice of name some months ago - but I have been swayed by the distaff side, who, despite not contributing even one 'sou' to the purchase fund has exercised some considerable sway in choice of colours, upholstery and other finery - including the name. I refused to entertain 'SS Sheffield' - her suggestion as the only embossed cutlery we own has 'Stainless Steel Sheffield' stamped on the back.
As time went on and we still did not have a name we both agreed on, it suddenly occurred to us what day it is when I collect - and I had a Seawych 19 many years ago (I always told people I owned a Sadler), called 'Solstice' for precisely the same reason..

'Equinox' will be in her best party frock on display at Southampton, and if I may inform, she will be sporting an aero luff spar which has been very kindly donated to me by Ralph Roberts of Aero LuffSpar Systems,

http://www.aeroluffspars.co.uk/default.html

I'll be putting something up in due course as to how I get on with it.. should be interesting.

Andy

Ps. Visitors on board very welcome - provided you are wearing full forensic overalls, gloves, hats, surgical mask and slippers...
The upholstery on board will be Matt's as I don't get my own until the week after the show.

Hi Tom, you will be very welcome. The rally will be similar to last year but from the plush and efficient facilities of the Ullswater Sailing Club and hopefully with bright spring weather. I'll post details nearer the time.  Meanwhile if you have any specific questions please ask here or you can contact me directly through the messages tab on this forum.  I tend to look at this once a week, so please don't expect an instant reply.  Where are you based please?  I can recommend the Bala, Rutland, Teifi and other rallys too, assuming they run next year and organisers don't have too many forms to fill in.

Hi Matthew
We live near Oswestry, in Shropshire. Our boat Shuna was delivered in 2013, and our first outing was one week later at the Golfe du Morbhian 2013.
This year we took her to the Seafair Haven Event in Pembrokeshire. We are already booked in for Morbihan 2015, so another event would be great.

Kind regards

Tom

Hi Tom

That's an impressive list of events you are taking part in.  How about adding Sail Caledonia 2015 to your collection of event pennants?  See www.sailcaledonia.org.

Are you aware of a well-known leading Bayraider 20 based in Oswestry?  If not I'll let Graham make his own introduction.

Hi Tom,

It's a bit landlocked around here isn't it? My nearest local sailing water is usually Lake Bala but otherwise, like you, I range far and wide. I can't imagine a more suitable boat for that sort of thing than the BR20.

Like Matthew, I strongly recommend Sail Caledonia.  Being their treasurer has nothing to do with it, of course. There may also be a repeat of Raid England next year, also great fun.

PS I'm no longer "leading" since Matthew decided on a radical change in his crew....

Tom

From where you are, can I also recommend the Teifi Rally, which is not a million miles from you (I whizzed past Oswestry to and from the Teifi Rally this year). It's great fun, in a beautiful spot which offers different sorts of sailing experiences from most other places. I'll be writing up this year's Jolly in a day or two - watch the appropriate space.

Gareth Rowlands, who organises the Teifi, favours June as ideal, but tide times are of the essence there, and there weren't any favourable tides at a w/e this year. I hope he'll let us know as early as he can when next year's Rally might be.

The Ullswater meeting will go ahead on 12th to 14th June but with a change of venue to the Glenridding Sailing Centre.

Ullswater Yacht Club has had a change of management and recently declared access to slipways and changing rooms will be restricted because priority will be given to local Club boats for training and racing Keelboats.

The good news is that Glenridding Sailing Centre (GSC) are very welcoming and happy to have us.  Visit www.glenriddingsailingcentre. co.uk to see what an excellent location this is.

The deal on offer from GSC is £20 per day (Fri pm to Sun pm counts as 2 days), which includes launching and use of facilities. We are also invited to the annual PSC Ceilidh in the village hall at a cost of £25 pp and includes feasting, drinking (included in price!) and dancing. The food and drink appeals although people with delicate feet may be relieved to hear I might leave dancing to others.

There are a number of good campsites nearby. Please see http://www.ullswater.co.uk/camping.html#Watermillock and make your own arrangements.

Unfortunately GSC are restricted to 15 boats which is as many as have already “registered an interest” but don't despair if your not registered, spare places will probably become available.

If you registered an interest (list below) then please confirm before 2nd May by sending me a message on the forum website (so as to keep this thread uncluttered) with your name, likely number of crew, boat name and type, interest in the Ceilbh (not obligatory) etc OR let me know if you cannot come so that available places can be offered to boats that have not previously registered but would like to.

Another place becomes available as I will not be able to get Gobhlan-G there I'm afraid. Hope you all have a great time and for any newcomers to Ullswater watch out for hazard marking red buoys that look like moorings near the outward bound centre on the opposite bank to Howtown. The rock I hit on my maiden voyage in the week before the rally last year was somewhere near 54deg 34' 46"N 21deg 52' 20" W according to the cursor on Google Earth.

I shall be working abroad for the two weeks prior to the Mylor Event and hence will have to 'haul out' and get the boat ready for the long trek south west that weekend.

I'm sure you will have a great event in a lovely venue, I've sailed from Glenridding several times and it is a cracking place.

For a flavour of last year's rally see the shaky video at https://youtu.be/QqE3L77EAHg One of the highlights was the Swallowboat fleet "milling about" at Patterdale.  Another memorable incident was the BR20fleet trying to catch up with 14ft Cavatina going down wind.  More sunshine is booked for this year's event in June.

Just a reminder that this year Glenridding Sailing Centre is hosting us with excellent launching facilities. The map attached shows Ullswater's many attractions and easily avoided hazards including buoyed rocks and caravan sites.

Five boats have confirmed so far:

BR20   Ristie - Tim
BR20e Alice Amy - Reg
BR20   Moirach - John
BR17   Tripos - Mark
BR20   Gladys - Matthew

Some free places are available - first come first served.

To keep this string uncluttered please let me know via the forum messaging service if you previously registered an interest but have not yet confirmed or cancelled.

There's been yet another delay to the start of my project, so I shall now definitely be coming. Having already cancelled my B&B in Pooley Bridge (in the mistaken belief that I would be in Nigeria) I now need to find somewhere to stay at the Glenridding end of the lake.

The down-side of Glenridding Sailing Centre is the lack of camping on site but there are good local campsites and accommodation to be found at:

http://www.ullswater.co.uk/camping.html#Watermillock

Side Farm is a short distance away on the lake shore and is my favourite but does not take pre-bookings so I will turn up with my small tent and take a risk.

It's an ill wind that blows no good Graham, so its good news from our point of view that your Nigeria trip is delayed and you can join us.

We are back from the Morbihan in one piece, and now getting ready for Ullswater.
Today I have booked a place at Gillside Campsite.
I have some questions.
Will we be launching our boats daily?
Are there any secure pontoons?
Can we drop an anchor and use a tender?
The sailing centre seems to be quoting open times from 10.00 am - 5.00pm

Here are some summary notes for the Ullswater rally next weekend (12-14 June)

Currently I have a list of 12 boats, so there's room for three more late entries.

BR17   Emily – Anthony
BR17   Tripos - Mark
BR20   Turaco III - Graham
BR20   Carpe Diem – Simon
BR20   Shuna - Tom
BR20   Ristie - Tim
BR20    Gladys - Matthew
BR20e  Moirach - John
BR20e  Alice Amy - Reg
BR20e  Amy Eleanor – David (maybe)
BR20e  Gobhlan-G – Rory
BR23    Vagabond – Rob

Please let me know if you are on the list and are not coming or not on the list and would like to come.

Please register and pay fees on arrival at Glenridding Sailing Centre. See map attached for GSC location near Patterdale.

GSC fees are £20/day (Fri pm to Sun pm counts as 2 days), which includes launching and use of facilities. We are also invited to the annual GSC Ceilidh in the village hall at a cost of £25 pp and includes feasting, drinking (included in price!) and, for those with agile feet and energy to spare, dancing.

Glen Ridding Sailing Centre’s require people to wear buoyancy aids on and around the water and boats have at least 3rd party insurance.

I shall be arriving about 5pm on Friday and camping at Gillside Farm.  Neither Gillside Farm on Side Farm accept prior booking, so I’ll sleeping under a hedge if they turn out to be exceptionally busy.  Please make your own arrangements. Campsites and B&B can be found at http://www.ullswater.co.uk/camping.html#Watermillock.

SAFETY

See the Ullswater Users Guide at www.daysoutinfo.co.uk/pdfs/Ullswater%20LUG_2.pdf with safety advice and a map showing the main things to avoid.

Also please read the Events - READ THIS FIRST post on this forum.

Note I'm not trained, qualified or insured to advise other people on risks for their sailing activities and:

-   I do not know participant’s capabilities
-   I do not know how good their equipment is for the conditions
-   I am unwilling to look after other people’s money

It is the boat skippers’ responsibilities to ensure their boat, crew and behaviour are safe for the conditions on the day.

No rescue boat service is available so it is up to us to look after ourselves and each other.

My unqualified risk assessment is:

Man-eating crocodiles, fire-breathing dragons, fire-quenching hippos, tsunamis, complicated tides and fierce currents are rare on Ullswater. Also rare are super-tankers with crews relying on radar to see your little boat and big catamarans speeding out to service wind farms.

On the other hand there are rather charming Edwardian lake cruisers (surprisingly fast), unstable dinghies with hydrofoils, lake swimmers, canoes, incompetents in small boats and me in Gladys - all best given a wide berth.

Some Swallowboats have encountered centreboard-eating rocks but the areas they (mostly) lurk are shown on the map at www.daysoutinfo.co.uk/pdfs/Ullswater%20LUG_2.pdf and marked in the real world with red-buoys or spindly beacons.  In common with any mountain surrounded water the wind can be playful, so reef early or be ready to swim.  For extra sport there may be a few irate land-owners and Ullswater Sailing Club along some of the shore line – but again those areas are shown on the map.

If anyone is aware of any other hazards please let everyone else know.

I look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones.

OBSTACLES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Apologies for teaching my Grannies to suck eggs!

For red buoy, read grubby red buoy.

1. The western shore, (opposite to sailing club) slopes gently into the lake and there are a number of old dry stone walls that extend underwater.
2. There are rocks in the centre of the Outward Bound bay and the northern end is quite shallow.
3. North of the Leeming Hotel next to the Oldchurch moorings, at about one third the way across the lake towards the sailing club, there is a long reef. There used to be a dan mark (now red buoy?) at the south end and a red buoy at the north end. This is now easily missed!!!
4. At the north end of the lake, by the most photographed boathouse in the west, the water shallows rapidly onto submerged rocks.

My great uncle used to live at Watermillock and I had hoped to make the event. Unfortunately aged parents preclude me from taking the whole weekend off but I will try and visit Glenridding on Sunday if possible.

Enjoy!

Not having been to a SB rally before, is there a plan for Saturday?
Is there somewhere we can sail to and find a pub for lunch?

Thanks David, very helpful.  I don't think Ullswater has significantly more malicious rocks than other lakes and with the benefit of the Ullswater Users Guide at www.daysoutinfo.co.uk/pdfs/Ullswater%20LUG_2.pdf
and your comments we should be able to avoid them.

Hi Anthony

What we do depends upon what people want and conditions on the day.

I presume most people will be on the water by 12.00 so how about the fleet setting off from near the Glenridding Sailing Centre at 12.00 and meeting for picnic lunch in the bay at Howton?  We can then return for tea and ice cream at St Patrick Boat's Landing.

Competitive types may not be able to help themselves and race.  How they organise that is up to them on the day.  The rest of us can enjoy "cruising in company".

Please see the map at www.daysoutinfo.co.uk/pdfs/Ullswater%20LUG_2.pdf  for location of GSC, Howtown and St Patrick's Boat Landing.

Sounds good to me. Myf will especially like the idea of tea.

Hopefully the current depression stays south where it belongs and we enjoy slightly better weather in the Lake District.

I am planning to arrive at GSC about 4pm today.  GSC closes at 5pm but I'll be camping in a small green tent with a dark blue V70 at Gillside Farm so you may find me there - or in a pub.  For those who don't know me I can be recognised as quite large and ugly but normally harmless.

My mobile phone is not working so please phone the Glenridding Sailing Center 017684 82541 if you have any concerns.

Morning all,

Just been on to Glenridding Sailing Centre - they are expecting us to be leaving boats overnight this evening and Saturday. So if you arrive after they shut this evening at 5.30 the gate at the end of their lane will look locked, but should be actually open. If it's locked there's a key left on reception at the Glenridding Hotel.

We should be there by 7.30 ish and staying in the campervan (grey Vantage Sol) at Gillside, so maybe see you this evening, or tomorrow morning anyway.

Hi Matthew
Many thanks for arranging such a good event. Kate and I thoroughly enjoyed the sailing, the scenery and of course the company from all the other Swallow Boat sailors.
The team at the Activity centre could not have been more helpful and accommodating, and having a campsite a short walk away was great.
Many thanks again.

Thoroughly seconded!  The Glenridding Sailing Centre couldn't have been more welcoming - they even winched our boats on to our trailers for us at the end of the day, which is a first for me.

The non-organisation by Matthew was superb and as usual, most of us had to be content with watching Gladys's stern disappearing over the horizon, even when Andrew wasn't on the helm.  I'm convinced that witchcraft is involved...

I have posted a few pictures and two charts on Flickr https://flic.kr/s/aHskaGM35B.  Luckily I was at the back of the fleet most of the time, which meant that the forward-facing sterncam got some good shots of most of the other boats.

Bit late to the party, but here's another blog post on the weekend, this time from Sue, under the pseudonym of Tammy Tour Guide (for complicated reasons, you don't want to know) with me as Tony.

https://tammytourguide.wordpress.com/2015/06/19/swallow-boats-rally-at-ullswater/

Thanks to all for a great time, especially Matthew, and everyone who made us feel very welcome.

See you again soon?

Many thanks to everyone who has posted, and especially to Matthew for organising. We had a great time on our first SB rally, (actually only the 3rd time we have sailed Emily) and I hope this encourages others to join in. Sorry no photos from us - we have a waterproof camera but have mislaid the charger

We appreciated all the tips - I have just carried out the recommended "doorstop" mod to the jib-boom, and I'm working on the spinnaker fitments (based on Tripos' fit out, but with an experimental single downhaul/pole extension arrangement.
