Anyone contemplating Semaine du Golfe Morbihan and would prefer not to be single handed. It sounds a wonderfull event to take part in and hopefully should be warm. My Bayraider or your boat i'm happy.

Semaine du Golfe 2011
Im in!
Bring on the Moules frite, the Galettes and the Breton Cidre! ...and then there is the food you actually pay for!
Reminder:- When visiting French supermarkets take a bag with you. They are not always provided.
When visiting the Cheese Festival take a rucksack!
Oh, yes! When bringing cheese home to the UK put it in a Drybag - large PVC roll top types are quite cheap - otherwise expect trouble. I had no end of bother with a drug squad sniffer dog when returning to Portsmouth, you know how Cocker Spaniels get when over stimulated! Damn thing ran off with 500g of ripe brie. "Im sorry, Sir. She only indicates like that with cocaine - usually!"

Claus
Seriously thinking of registering now for the Semaine du Golfe 2011 event, and i gather you are a seasoned veteran of this event, can i hear from you or please anyone else who would like to help me on usefull tips on planning for this event. I'm interested in learning from your experiences in all aspects of the planning for this trip, ferry deals, accomodation, what provisions to take, equipping the boat, etc, etc. It look's as if the water can get very busy with craft of all sizes, what "rules of the road" are observed is this standard maritime or racing rules (which i'm not familiar with).
Thanks in anticipation
Peter
-
Peter,
very little to say from my side. If you sign up for http://www.semainedugolfe.asso.fr/index.php?langue=gb&mod=&action= , they'll send you all info -in english- well ahead of the event, and you'll have no problem to get started with that. Ferries you'll have to find out yourself anyway, lots of choices there.
You now have the right boat for it and if you also do have the time and change, do take a leap and just go. You will not regret it.
-
Thanks for reponse Claus i will continue my research and make final decision soon, just waiting for confirmation of others. If anyone else has any words of wisdom on this event i would be only to happy to listen to them.
Thanks

Brittany Ferries are now open for booking 10% saving on all ferry travel to France and Spain in 2011.
I may have to send you their email though if you want to book.

Morbihan,
it'll become the biggest SwBs gathering outside the UK in 2011.
So far 6 BRs and one 1 CBL registered, in Flottille No. 3 alone. http://semainedugolfe.fr/index.php?mod=liste_bateau&id_flottille=3&ordre=nom_bateau&tri=asc
-
Six BayRaiders?
Damn!
Thats six crews in front of me in the queue for oysters and free wine each evening. Must get a faster boat.
-
VelaRaid and Velalonga 2011, Venice (IT)
Please note: Finally the dates are out, see the first posting above. No date collision with Morbihan Week. Their websites will be updated with the actual information soon.
-
Morbihan,
so far 7 BayRaiders in fleet No. 3: Azalai, Crofter, Joybells, Llafurio, Odette, Rhiannon and Spark, plus 1 Cardigan Bay Lugger: Four Sisters.
Excellent.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everybody. See you in France.
-
SEVEN of you now?
Hmm....Gonna need a bigger boat!
(Tony Langmead - Four Sisters)

I added a regatta in Ireland to the 2011 list, the Glandore Classic, http://www.glandoreyc.com/ .
It is not a sail & oar raid as such, but Glandore is in one of the most beautiful settings on the south coast of Ireland, and the sailing and racing inside and outside the harbour is really superb. Nice people, classic boats and good wind always.
No absolute need to bring an own boat, loads of opportunities to hop on one of the participating boats for the day. Some nightlife too.

Sorry Tony, EIGHT this morning. Latest entry is BR Catchando Bay.

Sorry Tony, EIGHT this morning. Latest entry is BR Catchando Bay.
Eight, now? That's a whole flotilla of BayRaiders! Almost One Design races every day!
As they are all going to sail rings around most of the other boats in this class I predict a deal of interest being created - even more than 2009.
I've not noticed any S17's or S15's signed up yet ..... but pleased to see a couple of old friends from previous events.
With over 500 boats (280 in Flot 2 and Flot 3 ) registered so far its seems that it will be another mammoth success for the Morbihan. Last time they coped with nearly 1000 boats - and it was still possible to find a peaceful spot for lunch if you wanted to avoid the throng. Amazing!
-
I added The Dorestad Raid to the 2011 list, exact dates to be announced later.
The Dorestad Raid is a real hardcore sail & oar raid, and one of the best in the European circuit. Get a taste from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdag5_cQYPQ .
By the way, anyone with info on other raid or raid-like events 2011, worldwide, pls come forward, so we can include them in the listing.

I have done an outline map of the proposed 2011 English Raid on Google maps which you should be able to see here:

I hope that it will go up on the Raid England website before long when they get round to updating it
http://www.raidengland.org/
It should be fun. Lots of Swallowboats and lots of other very interesting types. I put some photos of the 2010 Raid on my Picasa site here (I hope)

VELA Raid ( VEnice LAgoon Raid), June 14 - 18: Their website is updated now and taking registrations. http://www.velaraid.it/eng/index.html
The organisers, the Circolo Velico Casanova, are a very active group. On their website are numerous links to other sailing events in the Lagoon. http://circolovelicocasanova.provincia.venezia.it/

Hi, Claus.
I'd dearly love to do the VelaRaid.
You have done it a few times I believe. Are there any hidden downsides or expenses?
Mestre is pretty close to Venice so are accomodation costs/availability a problem in June?
(So many Raids, so little time!)
-

Hi Tony,
for the duration of the Raid itself the organisers give a good estimate of the costs per day.: http://www.velaraid.it/eng/iscrizioni.html .
If you wish to stay around a few days before or after, you can check hotel prices and availability for instance at www.venere.com .
Hotel accommodation in Mestre is less expensive than on Venice island. Between Mestre and Venice island there are numerous public transport. At least every ten minutes there is a local bus between Mestre and Piazzale Roma.
As an alternative, there is one camping site in Mestre north, and another one at Fusina, ab bit south of the island.

Morbihan: 10 BRs now. There is one Irish self-built BR in Flotille No. 2 now, named TBA.
TBA, if you read this: Flotille No. 2 Voile & Aviron is dominated by really small boats, Le Seils and 12 footers and such, so if there is even a hint of a blow, that Flotille is likely to be kept in the harbour or in sheltered waters only by the organisers. Which would be frustrating for more capable boats like the BRs. Do consider to reassign your boat to Flotille No. 3 which has more hardy boats in it. - All other BRs -and one Cardigan Bay Lugger- are in Flotille No. 3 .
-
Morbihan:
The organisers just wrote that due to overflow in Flottille No. 3:
Flottille n°3 La Petite Plaisance Traditionnelle
Loctudy, Olonnois, Drascombes, Cornish Shrimpers... Dériveurs anciens, "day-boats" populaires, et tous petits bateaux de construction traditionnelle < 6 m,
Mar 31 Ile d'Arz
Mer 1 Accueil soir : Larmor Baden
Jeu 2 Escale Ile d'Arz 15h00-16h30 Accueil soir : Vannes
Ven 3 Escale Le Logeo 11h00-15h00 Accueil soir : Port Anna (Séné)
Sam 4 Escale Port Navalo 13h00-15h30 - Parade Accueil soir : Port Blanc (Baden)
they have upgraded all Swallowboats en bloc to Flottille No. 7 which has boats of up to 8 metres
Flottille n°7 La Petite Plaisance Classique de moins de 8 m
Guépards, Cormorans, Belougas, Morgann, Tofinou, Billie Charlotte, Folkboats ainsi que les séries de dériveurs classiques, Flying Dutchman, Snipe, Caneton et 505
Mar 31 Ile d'Arz
Mer 1 Accueil soir : Arradon
Jeu 2 Escale Port Navalo 11h00-15h00 Accueil soir : Saint Goustan (Auray)
Ven 3 Escale Port Navalo 11h00-15h00 Accueil soir : Larmor-Baden
Sam 4 Navigation Baie de Quiberon - Parade - Accueil soir : Vannes
I like that, as fleet No. 3 was not scheduled to visit Auray, but No. 7 is. On the other side, we have many old friends in No. 3 and it would be pity to miss the reunion with them. However, there is always the meeting of all boats and fleet on Ile d'Arz on Tuesday.
-
Hi, Clause.....and all others Morbehan bound...
I'm a bit puzzled about the change from Flot:3 to Flot:7.
I have no worries about the new route - apart from the open sea bit off Ile de Meaban on the St Goustan to Larmor Baden leg which might bring us into conflict with square riggers, and their retinue of press boats - it looks good. I am more worried by the arbitrary nature of the redistribution, with at least two BR20s still listed in Flot: 3 (Rhiannon and Mehefin).
Moving light boats such as my CBL and the BR20s in with heavier boats (some of whom are over 2 tonnes) seems odd when boats such as Crabber 17s, 22s and a couple of Drascombe Coasters are still remaining in Flot: 3.
Be interesting to see how the BR20s match up to the Flying Dutchmen!
Plenty of time for all this to be sorted out - if sorting out is needed - just so long as it keeps the queue for the oysters to manageable proportions
-
... I'm a bit puzzled ...by the arbitrary nature of the redistribution, with at least two BR20s still listed in Flot: 3 (Rhiannon and Mehefin). ...
BRs Rhiannon and Mehefin were not built by the Swallowboats yard but were self-built by their owners. So probably they did not officially register as Swallowboats BayRaiders and thus were overlooked in the current redistribution of Swallowboats to Flot No. 7.
Flot No. 7 actually has more attractive routes to sail than No. 3, probably due to No. 7 boats presumably being faster and more seaworthy. I even read of some 'Regate' on the way, organised races so. That'll be fun.
My latest count is 11 BayRaiders 20, plus Tony's Cardigan Bay Lugger. Quite a fleet.
-
I see from the Semaine du Golfe Flotilla lists that Rhiannon and Mehefin are now back with the rest of the Swallow Boats Squadron (!) in Flotilla 7.
That was quick work. I wonder which other classes will have to be readjusted In view of these numbers:-
Flotilla Numbers 10/02/11
1 GIGS 34
2 SAIL & OAR 166
3 TRADITIONAL LEISURE BOATS 187
4 LARGE CLASSIC YACHTS 87
5 1960s CRUISERS 123
6 WORKING BOATS 80
7 SMALL CLASSIC YACHTS 161
8 CLASSIC MOTOR BOATS 10
9 CHARTER SHIPS 20
12 BASQUE FLOTILLA 11
Total 879
There seems to be a deal of flexibility and overlap between Flots 2,3,5 and 7 with a few boats able to make a case for inclusion in any group. I think, however, that Claus is right.... Flot. 7 has the better routes.
-
I plan to attend Morbihan with BR20 "Gladys". Looks great fun.
Any current advice on registration, where to go, what to take?
Matthew
-
Matthew,
best advice is probably to register asap to avoid the chance of being turned down if too late. They are well organised, but overnighting mooring facilities are of course limited.
As for general info, they'll send pretty comprehensive information by mail later. They will offer fair accommodation Formule on the camping ground in Port Blanc in separate 2- and 4-bunk cabins including breakfast, or you'll have to look for accommodation yourself. Slim chances by now.
Cross-Channel ferry bookings are your own business. During the event, they have a fleet of free buses to ferry crews between locations. Likewise, a fleet of ribs and dinghies ferry crews out to their moorings. Great friendliness all round.
Safety equipment: Foreigners have leave to limit their own safety equipment aboard their boats to what is standard in their home country. No sweat, all very friendly.
One thing you better bring is a navigation chart of the area. There is a big 'Comptoir de la Mer' chandlery in Auray, but it is not easy to find there.
P.S.
Proper navchart is SHOM 7137L .
-
I just heard an exciting rumour: The 'Mother of All Raids' -up and down the Douro Valley- may be repeated 2011 and 2012. Stay tuned.
-
If only that wasn't so far away form southern Bavaria.....
-
Thanks Clause; very helpful.
I have applied for registration (Group 7) and I am waiting hopefully for acceptance.
Looks excellent fun.

... I have a fair idea what the Douro Valley would look like -and would be like- if it was in close vicinity to London, Paris or Munich. Thank God it is where it is.
Being able to go without much ado to such wonderful locations all over Europe is the essence of trailer sailing for us.

Hi Claus
After watching BayRaiders blast around the Golfe 2 years ago whilst I pottered along in my Lugger am returning this year with Odette,my lovely Bay Raider. I have tried everywhere to get a tidal atlas of the Morbihan and a really good large scale map of the Golfe. Can you advise?
Thanks

Hi Chris,
pleased to be making your acquaintance. Heard about you from Henley Whalers.
Navcharts with tidal information: SHOM 7137L or IMRAY C39. I think the SHOM has the better scale 1:20,000 .
When they mail you detailed final informations, or with your registration pack upon your arrival, you will get all tide times for the participating localities. Or you can get the tides from easytide UK before your departure.
Hope this helps.
::) ::)I
Thanks Clause very helpful. Good old Whalers, hopefully they will be with us in Flot 7. Has anyone produced very detailed tidal flow charts like those you can get for the Solent or is that a secret known only to Morbihan locals? I got caught out by several tidal gates last time I was there and had to resort to my outboard. I'll probably be following the crowd so will just have to keep up this time.
regards
Chris
-
I'll probably be following the crowd so will just have to keep up this time.
Hi, Chris.
I fear neither of us will be keeping up with Claus this year!
Looks like he has swapped from LLafurio (BR20) to Craic (Sea Raider).
Thats the boat (just in case you didnt know) that came second in the Caledonia raid straight out of the box....and then only because an 8 oared gig rowed past him in a calm! Some say that the wet paint reduced skin friction or some such but the truth is that a Bayraider is a de-tuned Sea Raider ....or to put it another way, a Sea Raider is a BayRaider on steroids.
Either way, its lucky I dont have a competative bone in my body.....
(Yeah. Right!)
-
Douro Raid 2011 / 2012
: Sorry to report the project has been withdrawn. Financial reasons.
Morbihan 2011
: The BayRaiders in Flotilla 7 are only the second largest group of boats there. From what I can see the 'Guepards' are the most numerous, followed by 10 BayRaiders 20. Another strong group of boats to be watched in that Flotilla will be the several 'Stir Ven' designed by Francois Vivier. And many other interesting boats, among them one 'King Alfred' class boat, designed by Nigel Irens, equipped with an electric inboard.
-
Morbihan 2011:
In the information pack that came by post there is this 'Bulletin d' engagement aux regates.."
This needs to be filled out and sent back until May 27 by anyone wishing to partake in the races which will be organised for Flottillas 3,4, 5 and 7.
Question: What is 'N° de cagnard'? What is 'No Licence FFV'?
-
Hi Claus,
re: Question: What is 'N° de cagnard'? What is 'No Licence FFV'?
Cagnard is the number given for a race
Licence FFV (Fédération Française de Voile) pertains members of the French Sailing Club, when applicable.
See you there soon
Catchando Bay ( BR #48)
-
Merci, Guy.
So the Cagnard No. is probably the individual number the organisers will assign to the boat prior to arrival. I assume they'll fill this in themselves.
BTW, the fax No. they gave on the form did not work for me. So I sent that to the official Semaine fax No. .
Tuesday morning, before we sail over from Arradon to Ile d'Arz, we could gather outside Arradon mooring area and sail out as a group. Any takers, when shall we say, 9:30 or 10?
