Title: Lake District Ullswater 2021
Post by: Matthew P on 02 Jan 2021, 12:55
Enthusiastic and resilient Swallow Boaters are already asking about another meeting at Ullswater this summer.

Glenridding Sailing Centre (GSC) has again kindly agreed to host our meeting, this time for 9th-11th July..

To avoid repetition of information that tends to get buried at the end of these strings, please see "Ullswater" in the Blog section.

GSC provide parking, launching/recovery, changing rooms and a warm welcome Friday to Monday.  If you are attending then please let me know on this forum or messages and book yourself and boat directly with GSC at:

Matthew,

Sparkle will be there. Our being there is a little less certain.

We have decided to use Glenridding as our base this year. The only thing that could upset our plans is a possible grandchild’s arrival which is due a week earlier. Nature will prevail.

I phoned Glenridding Sailing Centre today and they are still expecting us 9th-11th July.

Dinghy Cruising Association members who cannot make that weekend might like to join the DCA rally at the same venue (GSC) the weekend 3rd- 4th July.

There is a useful information sheet at http://mediafiles.thedms.co.uk/Publication/CU/cms/pdf/adventure-onwater-ullswater-lugandmap.pdf  It includes an excellent map - image only attached.

A prospective (but misguided?) BRe buyer would like a test sail - are any BRE owners willing?

I'm looking forward to seeing Tim, Rufus + Jane, John, Andrew and others at Ullswater

Thanks Matthew. We are booked with the centre and campsite and looking forward to it. We have just returned from a week on Loch Lomond - which has much to recommend it.

I've just returned from a good weekend at the Dinghy Cruising Association meeting at Glenridding, Ullswater.

On Saturday a variety of eight boats companionably cruised to Sandwick Bay for a picnic.  We then sailed back through the Birkett Memorial race fleet of 160 boats that sailed the length of the lake and back from Ullswater Sailing Club.  No collisions or even anxious moments.

On Saturday evening some of us had an enjoyable evening meal at the Travellers Rest, disturbed only by loud cheering from the bar at about 8pm.  We don't know what caused this.

Gillside Farm campsite is fully booked so on Friday morning I went to Side Farm which does not take bookings. It was busy but I got an excellent pitch overlooking the lake towards the steamer pier and the sailing centre.  Gillside farm campsite has good basic facilities but much of it is quite steep and the approach track is narrow and rough, so it is not suitable for motor caravans.  The owners are very relaxed but don't like groups.  Most campers are serious walkers or lake users.

I'm looking forward to a similar weekend with the Swallow Boats meeting at Glenridding next weekend.

Thanks Gareth  I've posted some photos to Facebook https://www.facebook.com/search/photos?q=swallow%20yachts%20association

As I'm not a frequent Facebook user I'm not sure if the photos have gone in OK or come unstuck. If anyone with FaceBook skills can and wants to edit then please go ahead.

Thanks Matthew
Like you I am not a frequent facebook user so can't help in this respect. I can see the photos (after a couple of attempts clicking randome buttons!) and note the excellent illustrations of my anchor buddy at work - just in case anyone thinks Halen Y Mor is unattended / drfiting off!
