Thanks for posting this Claus. Do you know who is organising the possible English Raid? I could possibly make the Solent in July/August. My main problem is figuring out how to row my boat

Julian,
I do know them, they have sent a Heads Up! notice, but are not ready yet to go fully public with final details.
What I heard is that the English Raid will go out of -and end in- Keyhaven. Possible stopovers will be taken from Christchurch, Keyhaven, Lymington, Yarmouth, Newtown Creek, Beaulieu River, Cowes/Medina River, Hamble River, Wootton Creek, Bembridge, Portsmouth or Chichester.
Stay tuned.
C.

No chance of a Rio  Minho raid next year, then?

Eu sei, miúdos! Porque don' t nós fazemos a Invasão para a direita aqui!

(Bad Babelfish translation of "I know, kids. Why dont we do the Raid right here!")

Tony,
Rio Minho is not possible in 2010, too little time left. I am waiting for the  Club Nautico San Telmo in Tui to respond. Difficult, as I have no spanish.

I am looking at 2011, before the Morbihan Week, so the UK participants can take the direct ferry from Portsmouth to Santander and go back by road via Morbihan Week. Best of both worlds.

BTW, the Velalonga Raid Venice has just been confirmed for June 1st to 5th. 2010. All Raiders and other Swallowboaters should consider it, it's really wonderful, well worth the journey. We'll be there ourselves.

Claus, you mention an English Raid starting from Keyhaven. I sail from Keyhaven, am a member of Keyhaven Yacht Club and know the owner of the boat yard just behind the club. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Dear Brian,
that is a most kind and certainly most welcome offer. I will send you a PM and will try to put you into direct contact with the organisers.

Brian,
I was apparently unsuccessful sending you a PM.
I would like to pass your e-mail address on to the organisers of the Solent Raid. Please email me at claus.riepe at googlemail.com .

Careful what you wish for .... I have never been so busy! If this is retirement I should have read the small print more closely.

Thanks for the pdf Claus. 20 boats! The event is supported by the Royal Lymington. Between the Royaland Keyhaven Clubs there would be more than 20 Scows wanting to join in. Brian

One of the Solent Raid organisers has been in touch and we hope to meet up next week. He asked if I had a Swallow Boat. Only a little Scow I am afraid. Any chance Matt might need a crew to test the new BR17?

Has anyone tried the Three Rivers Race from Horning, on the Broads?

Sorry to be so uninformed but are raids always camping affairs? Months spent living in tents working for the Queen have left me less than enthusiastic.

Edwin, not at all, most raids are with on-shore B&B or on-board hotel barge accommodation, or on-board sleeping of course. Camping is rather the exception. Up to you to enquire with the organisers.

I think the English RAID could well be a major SwallowBoats outing. I am planning to be there to act as a shepherd to little boats (or shepherdess I suppose, on Daisy G's behalf) I have thrown together a Google map of the planned route. This is my own toy, there may well be an official one coming out at some stage. If you are interested it is on my blog page at:

The english language version of it is not yet functional at this moment.

The Vela Raid english language website is now functional at: http://www.velaraid.it/eng/index.html .

Some useful practical info at http://www.velaraid.it/eng/info.html .

We will be there with our SeaRaider. I heard there will also be partaking raiders from UK, The Netherlands and France. If ever possible, do join in, it's great.

Hi, Claus.

This year I cant do the English raid (planned family holiday)and cant get to Venice.
Feeling deprived, so next year thinking of a Grand Tour. Semaine du Golfe, Velaraid plus any other events in Europe or interesting launch sites I can come up with, then Greece for August. First, I need to reorganise my camping arrangements and make sure the old car is up to it....and...  Oh, yes. Need to find a sponsor!

Hi,  Claus

The VelaRaid is definitely the place to be this summer! Wish I could make it.

Just had a quick look at the Seafair Haven and English Raid sites and there are no less that 9 Swallow Boats registered for each, making them the best represented class for the English Raid. Only 3 Drascombes registered , by contrast, as far as I can see.
Rather more at Seafair Haven but then, the BayRaider has only been around for 3 or 4 years and Drascombe luggers have been popping out of the molds since Noah was a lad!
....and it would seem that those of us who are waiting for a secondhand market in BayRaiders to develop might be better occupied in putting down a deposit on a new one and joining the queue!
