General Discussion / Re: Why did you sell your Swallow?
« Last Post by Sea Simon on 28 Feb 2024, 13:26 »
Sold my BRe to buy a (used) BC26. Seeking more comfort in my oldish age...
In that respect, a major leap forward,  perhaps too much in 26ft? I could live without  a porcelain sea toilet (c/w holding tank) and running hot water... at two basins.
Yet it still sails well and has proven competitive in club racing - even sailing single handedly.
We did OK at Mylor Raid 2023 too, mostly against BC23s (no other 26s, but one Coast 250) - but not on handicap, otherwise we would have won almost everything (see my other post re RYA/RORC crazy handicapping of Swallow-style water ballast boats!).
We this year have added both symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers... ;)

Boat lives afloat all season, my nerves (nor my car) wouldn't stand towing it about.
My car struggles with even the MT trailer at (I  think?) >1T and almost 30ft long.
Luckily MT trailer storage is "free",  and not in my garden!

From what I've seen online, I do like the new BC 21. How much? I've  seen no prices.

Technical / Semco

I have ordered one of the new Baycruiser 21 boats and it will be sail no 6, hopefully ready in mid-May. As I live on the banks of the Fal I may see some of you in July. Over the years I have had a succession of boats - Drascombe Luggers, Shrimpers, Crabber 22s - and have always faced the dilemma of what to put on the teak brightwork. I have used Deks Olje and Varnol - neither of which were very durable; Cetol which was very thin and ran everywhere when applying it, but it did a reasonable job and was what Cornish Crabbers used for years; Woodskin, much easier to apply, lasted quite well but made the wood very dark. Matt is suggesting three options: Danish oil, Woodskin or Semco. The inference is that Semco should allow the teak to stay lighter in colour. I know nothing of Semco and very little seems to have been written about it on the web. It was mentioned in a post some years ago but no one seems to have followed it up. So has anyone used Semco or have any views on it? Perhaps I should make clear that I will certainly put something on the brightwork rather than allow it to go grey. Many thanks

I sold my open SR and BR Raidboats, because I no longer do Sail & Oar raids.

I am selling my BRE, because I no longer plan to sail that around Ireland. -Family, dog, age.

I am also selling my BRE, because for what I do locally, a lot: fishing, whalewatching, pubcrawling, cooking, snoring, I found a better suited and more comfortable old shallow draught keelboat. Which I beefed up with a modern BR rig, to have the best of both worlds. Very happy with that now.

IMO one should sell boats when other people could make better use of them.

After all these years, I still can’t envisage selling my BR20.  I bought it new in 2010 and it’s still going strong.  It’s not used as extensively as in the good old days when I used to trail it across Europe.  But it’s still being modified, with more electronics than ever and the imminent installation of Bentley boards https://www.swallowyachtsassociation.org/smf/index.php/topic,2800.0.html.

I really like the look of the new BC21 but unless I win the lottery it’s out of reach financially and I still prefer having a boat without a lid.  I’ve also considered trading down to a much lighter BR17, which would be easier to manhandle in and out of an awkwardly shaped driveway.  The better alternative is to grub out some obstructive hedging on the drive when my wife’s not looking!

General Discussion / Re: Swallow Yachts Association on Facebook
« Last Post by Julian Merson on 27 Feb 2024, 15:52 »
As a new member new owner and advocate of FB I would use a FB site for Swallow Yachts . I agree it would connect to a younger audience and enhance the Swallow Yachts profile .Easy access is key as is ease of use . How does Matt and his team feel about a FB site running alongside their own ?
Well, I don't know.  Perhaps you could ask, although my understanding is that he was central to the setting up of this ‘Association' as well as its website which exists alongside his own.  So I don't see a problem and I would guess he is very pleased that people who buy his boats want to set up a page to express their enthusiasm for the same…

Technical / Re: Electrical autonomy

Further and further off topic - our power went back on after 13 hours.  My claim for £90 compensation has already been accepted.  That will pay for some of the extra wiring and other stuff that I've had to buy for when the grid keeps letting us down.

Interestingly, the wifi router was battery powered without any issues for the whole time.  Not so the service from the internet provider, which failed after 12 hours.  My suspicion is that our local internet junction box (BT/Plusnet) has a UPS that couldn't cope with the extended mains power outage.

We looking at buying a BRe, there's one for sale locally, but its stuck on land.
So any BRe owner near Plymouth, or in SW, happy to take us out for a brief sail?
Difficult to make an offer if you've never actually been in one.

Thanks !

An additional benefit of having a lot of battery capacity is that it can run LED lighting and the wifi router during household power cuts.  Where I live in rural North Kent, these are frequent and often quite extensive during the winter.  We’re in the middle of one at the moment because of downed cables and they don’t expect to sort it out for several hours.  We have no mobile signal here but do have gas for cooking.  The gas boiler and central heating circulation pumps don’t work without electricity, so I’ve fired up the wood-burning stove.  We’ll survive!

Sailing and Events / sailing beginning of May
« Last Post by frank on 25 Feb 2024, 18:51 »
Hello,
my name is Frank, 54 years old from Germany. I'm sailing on Folke boats on Baltic sea the last 10 years. Also I'm familiar with Barnegat and Zugvogel dinghies.

When reading the Dinghy Cruising Companion I became aware of the Bay Raider 20 and would be very excited of sailing a Bay Raider or Bay Cruiser boat.

My question is if there is somebody searching for a crew member in the week from May 5th to May 10th 2024 ?

Maybe there are also people from Germany in the forum or people that want to make an sailing trip to Germany (I think Schlei and Dänische Südsee would be ideal sailing destination for Bay Raider/Cruiser )

looking forward to hear from you
best wishes
Frank
