GPS speedometer
« on: 30 Jul 2022, 08:51 »
As gadgets go, I think this is quite fun https://www.asap-supplies.com/products/kus-gps-speedometer-gauge-15-knots-black-bezel-and-dial-jmv00371.  Easier to read than hunting through a jumble of different numbers on a GPS screen.  If you like to live dangerously, you can also buy it more cheaply directly from China https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32975744955.html.

This version is the lowest speed model available.  I don’t think that most of us will be troubling the right hand side of the dial.

If you are feeling rich then the Velocitek Speedpuck is the bees knees as a boat speedo. No wiring required and take it home when not using it, wise considering the price....

At nearly 10x the price of the KUS speedometer (if bought from China), i think I’ll pass!  In fact, I think I’ll pass on the KUS too.  Alternative plans will be revealed in due course.

I just used to spit over the side and see how fast it moved backwards. But my crew think this is old man's technology.

I'm still using my 20  year old Garmin GPS 72. Youngsters laugh at that too!
Gives a nice big gps digital speedo, and a course to steer (when sailing between my old waypoints which covers me as Fowey based,  Yealm > Helford. No charts/maps obviously... Runs on 2 x AA batteries, maybe 2 days.

I use my phone with navionics mounted with a quad lock where we can all see it. Works a treat, but needs a waterproof phone.

As for a waterproof phone, I can recommend the "Doogee S96 GT". Waterproof, rugged, big battery, huge memory, Android 12, very good screen resolution and lighting, dual SIM, and many other features. Inexpensive, for all that. I  once dropped an earlier Doogee phone in kneedeep saltwater, only noticed 15 mins later, found it, no damage.
Ex various Drascombes, ex SeaRaider (WE) #1 "Craic", ex BR20 (GRE) "Llafurio", ex BR20 (GRP) "Tipsy", currently BRE (modified for open sea passages) "Homer", Drascombe Drifter "27" and Drascombe Drifter No. 31 "Amity". Homeport: Rossdohan

I see this handset has a night vision function.
Is that of any possible use to us when boating?

Possibly. And there's a bunch of other indoor/outdoor features also, like compass, clinometer, spirit level and noise meter. FM radio as well, with very good reception. Underwater photography. Wireless charging.
- A dream machine for a sailor. I dumped my other more expensive phones for it, and I am not looking back.

Re: GPS speedometer _ Clipper Electromagnetic 2 Speed Log
« Reply #9 on: 18 Feb 2023, 10:23 »
I'm considering fitting one of these, to solve paddle wheel misery....
Also, to show speed thru water, as opposed to over ground from the GPS.
I expect this unit to be more sensitive,  react faster and so help with sail trim?

https://www.nasamarine.com/product/clipper-electromagnetic-speed-log/

Has anyone tried one? Any thoughts?

I note that NASA still talk about cleaning the sensor, so am I just getting a £250 fire, for my existing frying pan?
...and a potential pita making another hole in the hull...
