First time boat builder...what do I need?
« on: 13 May 2010, 13:29 »
I could ramble for days about what brought me to the point of considering building my own boat, but if you're reading this, your story is probably very similar. Needless to say, I am very interested in Swallow boats.

My qualifications?: I like building things. I have built a few accoustic guitars, a few pieces of furniture and I am an avid aeromodeler building lots of rubber powered stick and tissue model airplanes. I've built nothing the size of a sailboat, but I own a tablesaw, 14" bandsaw, drill press, belt and palm sander, scrollsaw, downdraft sanding table and various other wood working tools.

My problem is where to build it. I do not have a garage. I do have a large workshop, but it only has two doors 31" wide. Nothing worse than building a boat and having it stuck inside my house. So first a basic, probably silly question, will a Swallow 15 or 17 hull fit through a 31" door, sideways of course?

I suppose there is this option. It is 16'9" long x 8'10" wide. A Storm 17 should fit inside. Not bad for $200 USD.
