Insurance for my BRe
« on: 03 Dec 2014, 15:45 »
Hi Everyone,

My wife Helen and I will be taking delivery of our new BRe, "Myfanwy" in early March next year.  We therefore need to arrange insurance and would be grateful for any recommendations, as to insurers, anyone is willing to share with us.

Have followed your discussions in recent weeks in the Forum and am very impressed as to how active and friendly it all seems.  We very much look forward to joining the "Swallow Family"!  We are based in Hampshire.

Kind regards,

Peter and Helen Williams

Peter / Halan

I use Aston Scott in Padstow (01841 532939).

It's been a while since I shopped around so can't guarantee how competative they are.

Peter

If you qualify on the age front i can recommend Saga Boat Insurance, i have had my BR20 insured with them for four years, one theft claim which they paid up on without question.
Around £165.00 a year which covers boat, trailer, petrol outboard, electric outboard, Garmin chartplotter.

I'm out tomorrow with my boat on Rutland water, trying out my new code 0 sail, myself and Andy D sail all year round and always enjoy the outings on our Swallow Boats the pint and hot meal in the Wheatsheaf finish the day off.

Dear Gareth and Peter C,

Fantastic many thanks for such a rapid response.  I fear I do qualify on the age front Peter, have done for the past 5 years actually so will give them a try.

I have no idea what a code 0 sail is but am familiar with pints and hot meals.  Have a great day on Rutland Peter.

Kind regards,

Peter W

I insured my new BRe this spring with Haven Knox-Johnston for ca £220 having no no claims bonus to bring forward. I have used St Margaret's (now incorporated into the former) in the past and they paid up without undue questions after a dismasting while racing in the Firth of Forth. I should have tried Saga but thought a sailing specialist might be more prudent.
Based on my experience you will have great joy with your BRe.

Thanks Rory.  I have used Pantaenius with my previous boat, they have been very good but are not the cheapest.

We are really looking forward to the BRe

Kind regards,

In the past I have used CraftInsure. Last year I moved to Bishop Skinner who gave discounts to RYA or RNLI members. They gave me a fantastic quote.

I go to the market every year and will be starting with the above this coming year.

I chose Bishop Skinner because Julian Swindell had found them good when he needed to claim. I was already a member of the RYA and RNLI Offshore so got a discount.  Didn't think of Saga (I always forget how old I am!).

Peter (W) - you say you're based in Hampshire; my BC20 "Seatern" lives on the River Itchen in Southampton and I sail in Southampton water and the Solent.  I'm always hoping to see other Swallow Boats!

I would re-endorse Bishop Skinner. I don't know if they are the cheapest, but when making a claim, they were excellent. I did once get a quote from Saga, just after I "qualified". I was surprised that they were more expensive than any other, at the time. They also now send me endless bumff which I am heartily sick of receiving.

Thanks Julian and Peter T, I will give Bishop Skinner and Saga a call and see which is more competitive.  Thank you all very much.

Peter T, I will be keeping the BRe at home but anticipate I will be mostly sailing from Key Haven.  If you ever venture up to the Western parts of the Solent please let me know and we can perhaps meet up in Yarmouth or somewhere.

Kind regards,

Peter W

I went past Keyhaven a few times this summer, you can see some video from one trip via the September page of my Seatern blog, or directly on YouTube at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjO1_mm0ttc .
Just past the Needles is about my limit for a day trip from home. The only problem is that when I reach Keyhaven it's always near low tide neaps; no good for launching from Keyhaven!  That way I can launch on the morning tide and use the ebb to get down to Hurst Narrows, then come back with the flood. But hopefully we'll meet up sometime in the summer, maybe if I overnight one side or the other of Hurst Spit.

Nice video Peter. I like the way you edited to put comments and moved your position on the map. Do you use a video editor?

Hi David, thanks, yes I use the Mac iMovie'11 application (version 9.0.4).  I used to use (the costly) Final Cut Pro but I find iMovie quicker and just as good for my purposes. The maps were prepared using Garmin Homeport plus Photoshop.

I've been keeping an eye on your video clips but all that sun and blue seas is just too envy making!

Peter W, I love Keyhaven (sailed a Heron out of there for 10 years), and as the new base for my Trouper is likely to be Studland, I could easily trailer round to Keyhaven some time - or even further for some sort of informal Solent meet?  Would Beaulieu fit the bill, Peter T?

Can I return to insurance? With a home-build boat, I can't get more than Third Party unless I get a 'survey' done. With my Storm Petrel, a half page comment to the effect that it wouldn't fall apart and founder, from a recognised boat/dinghy builder, was accepted and I upgraded to fully comp (that was before a trip to Lake Garda). The chap who did that for me is now building and sailing dinghies in heaven, so I can't ask him again for my Trouper! Can anyone suggest who might help? I think someone builds scows (the Lymington sort) in Keyhaven, so that might be another reason for a visit there.

Michael (Trouper 12 Cavatina)
