August Bank Holiday at Rutland
« on: 23 Aug 2015, 00:10 »
I'm planning to sail from Rutland Watersports Center, near Whitwell, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August.  Note this is "not-an-event" ::)

Will anyone else be there?

We might well pop up on Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting. We have friends visiting who are keen to sail.

I had thought of getting to the reservoir on Friday evening. But I'm getting cold feet. I spoke with the Whitwell Centre who warn that scheduled there for Saturday is a triathlon (Vitruvian Triathlon - a thousand entries I think).  The centre advise me that it'll be pretty noisy from 5.00am.

Or shall I bring the pushbike instead?

Mrs Peacock is resisting travel on Friday evening so we'll arrive Saturday mid-morning, hopefully when all the swimmers have swum off.

I look forward to a demonstration of spinnaker handling Anthony.  My large umbrella is easy to handle but maybe not as effective.

Will you be staying in your campervan John?

At least the weather looks OK-ish.

Change of plan.  As John has pointed out,  there is a triathlon based at Whitwell Sailing Centre on Saturday.  WSC now tell me they will not just be noisy but will be closed for sailing until until 3pm Saturday although they will open after that.

Rutland Sailing Club on the other side of the reservoir at Edith Weston tell me they are quiet this weekend and happy to have day-sailers.  Cost for one day membership is £30/boat or £50 for two days, phone 01780 720292 or see www.rutlandsc.co.uk

RSC say there is a campsite near them suitable for camper-vans - email clara@new.co.uk to book.  We will be staying with relatives in Peterborough though.

So now I plan to launch from Rutland Sailing Club about 11am on Saturday and probably sail across from RSC to the beach near Whitwell Sailing Club to meet friends for a picnic lunch on Sunday.

I hope to get to the Whitwell Centre on Friday evening (in the camper, Matthew). Their people suggested I launch then to beat the crowds. There was no mention of being closed for sailing. I'll ring 'em again to check this.

So, all being well, i may see you on the reservoir middayish Saturday, Matthew (and Anthony?).

Matthew, I'll send you a pm.

John
