BayRaider; Bed plus Table
« on: 17 Feb 2009, 16:04 »
I looked at the original Swallowboats BayRaider bed insert which doubles as a table, whether I could copy that. I soon decided I couldn't, it's too clever.

So I improvised a bit.

1. To build a bed insert is simple enough, just a piece of plywood. Cut in two, with hinges underneath, so it folds.

2. Then I found this little folding teakwood table in the house, 'handbag' design. I made some cutouts to the legs.

3. Thus, that table now 'rides' on the Centreboard case top.

4. For a larger tabletop, I can put the bed insert on top of it.

5. When not in use, it all fits nicely into the stowage compartment.

That little folding table is very handy on the boat, and inexpensive. Found it at: http://www.kai-wiechmann.de/moebel_details.cfm?articleid=9&section=garten&stil=garten

(Click on the magnifying glass icon for a closer look.)

I am sure the vendor imports it from the far East, so there is a chance that there is a UK based importer as well.

Here is an other one at £34.99.  But I think I could use the sleeping board as a table top and use the table legs idea.

Claus what size ply did you use for the sleeping board?

Hi David,
the original size ply used by the yard is 18 mm. I used 15 mm because I had that lying around idle. 15 is good enough but 18 would be perfect. I used a raw piece of 710 x 835 mm (LxW) to make my beds 1,900 mm long, but the dimensions may be different for a wooden BayRaider.
Then you need two 180 degree hinges for folding the thing and two short 8 mm wooden plugs which are to engage with that railing so the thing does not slide aft while you sleep on it.
I painted two coats of Sadolin with one topcoat of Cetol Marine.

Good luck.
