I worked in the Middle East for a year back in the 1970s and used to love watching the dhows being built down on the beach. I scanned all the old slides I could find and posted them on Flickr. The aesthetics of the hull shapes are just stunning. All just built in the open on the beach with big nails, teak logs and lots of man power.

Fascinating!
What a range of hull shapes.
Everything from straight stems, raked stems...and is that a clipper bow? Full section load carriers to slim rowing tenders...and a dug-out canoe?
Propulsion methods:
Sweeps, Lateen sails, inboard engines and even twin outdrive legs.

Any idea of a practical reason for the large sheer strakes extending past the transom...or is it just a traditional echo of earlier construction techniques?
The extravagant stem heads have an animistic look to them and the beautifully crafted representational decorations of fish would certainly be discouraged in the Hadith. Perhaps these come from a pre-Islamic tradition? Where exactly were these boats being built? Let's hope the skills and traditions are still being used and passed on.

Hi Tony
The boats were built literally on the beach. Most in Abu Dhabi, in an area which is now probably a shopping centre, and some on the beach in Sharjah. I doubt that anyone builds them there any more sadly. But they were still building them on the beach in Zanzibar in 2001, when I took these pictures. No engine in these ones, just wind and muscle;
